This is the 2017 Lincoln Continental: Lincoln's Luxury Flagship Lands in Detroit

The 2017 Lincoln Continental is here. Lincoln pulled the covers off it its new flagship -- well, three of its new flagships -- at the 2016 Detroit auto show, and we're pleased to say that much of the big, bold concept car's character made it to production intact. There's a little less chrome this time around, but the face, the silhouette and even that wild blue interior are all here, along with a boatload of luxury features and safety tech.

Power comes from a Lincoln-exclusive 3.0-liter V6 estimated to produce an even 400 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque while burning premium gasoline. The reports that trickled out in the wake of the Continental conept's debut were correct: The Continental does indeed ride on a front-wheel drive platform. An all-wheel drive system with a Dynamic Torque Vectoring system is available.

Whether the FWD platform will be a turn-off to the Continental's prospective buyers remains to be seen; certainly, Audi has no problem moving its product. Moreover, the new Lincoln’s emphasis seems to be on pure comfort, not necessarily the sport-tinged luxury that we’ve become accustomed to as of late.

“Serenity” seems to be go-to word for the interior -- Lincoln says it designed the car to be a rejuvenating, relaxing environment for all of its occupants. The cabin is toned down a bit compared to the concept, but there is still plenty of wood and leather and some really wild seats. Up front, there are 30-way adjustable “Perfect Position” buckets that include independent, adjustable thigh support and available massagers, in addition to heating and cooling.

Don’t worry: rear-seat passengers can get the massagers, too.

Naturally, this thing's loaded with technology, from safety features like pedestrain detection and pre-collision brake assist to convenience features including adaptive cruise control and parallel and perpendicular park assist. Steering and suspension are adaptable. An active noise cancellation system and acoustic laminated glass should ensure vault-like silence inside, if you wish, or you can crank up the available Revel audio system.

Lincoln left a lot of questions unanswered at the reveal. We're still waiting to hear about how much the 2017 Continental will cost, for one, especially when equipped with all the bells and whistles; we noticed that a lot of the features mentioned above are options, not standard. But from what we can tell so far, the new Continental is Lincoln's best shot at making a splash in the luxury market -- provided the car serves up a driving experience that's confident, comfortable and maybe just a tad on the cushy side.
